Confession of a Closet Slob

I have a confession to make.  I have been wearing sneakers to the office most of the winter.  Not because I lack shoes.  I have been telling myself it is for comfort and that it is too cold outside and I want to keep my feet warm.  But to be honest with myself it's because I have let my closet go a little.  Ok, ok, I admit it... I've let my closet go A LOT!
Let's be real here... when I put away laundry, by the time I am done with the massive heap of Chloe's clothes and Christopher's clothes, by the time I get to my clothes I am tired.  As a result of this pure laziness, a lot of my clothes just get shoved in drawers that are already so jammed packed I can barely open them! I like to consider myself a pretty organized person.  When I open my closet I feel like a closeted slob like Monica and her secret closet.
Every morning when I am getting ready for work I want to scream, "I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR!!!"  I know it is a universal problem all women face.  In truth, I have a ton of clothes that are in disorganized heaps all over my bedroom. Some on top of my dresser, some on top of my husband's dresser, some on top of my closet and a ton on the floor on my closet.
Cleaning out my closet has been on the back of my mental to-do list.  Luckily I came across a challenge at Domestically Speaking. Challenge accepted!
We don't have big closets.  In fact, it seems the past couple of years every house we move to the closets get smaller and smaller.  Our closets are so small that when we moved in I told Christopher he could have the master bedroom closet and I will take the guest bedroom closet.  It works fine for now since we have different schedules I don't have to wake him looking for clothes in the morning.  Plus, I have the deep closet that can hold two rows of clothes.... I can rotate them out with the seasons.  One day when we have kid no. 2 I will have to find somewhere else to keep my clothes.
Alright, here is the embarrassing before....
I know, it's disgusting and embarrassing!  It's no wonder I can't find anything other than my sneakers to wear.... look at that mess at the bottom.
First things first, I took everything out of my closet.  I bought one of those shoe organizers.  I put all of my summers shoes in it and hung it in the back.  In the spring I can put all of my winter shoes in it when I pull out the summer shoes!
I laid all of my clothes on the bed and went through what I wear and don't wear. I made a donate pile, a winter pile and a spring/summer pile. I probably should have done this months ago when I pulled out my winter clothes to begin with.  I organized all my clothes by color, which is how I have always organized my closets but it has gotten harder to do with a small closet.
Here is my closet now.
Tiny, isn't it?  At least now I can find see my shoes and find the sweaters I am looking for in the morning!
Do you have a secret messy area of your home, maybe a closet, storage room or junk drawers that you just can't seem to keep clean no matter what you do?
I just added huge walk-in his and her closets to our "next house must-have list."  What absolute must-haves are on your dream house list?

  1. Well it's a lot better. My husband and I have one closet we have to share, it is a mess, I hate even thinking about it!

  2. Okay, you get a pass for messy. That is the smallest closet ever. How DO you do it? I admire your spunk and spirit making the best of it. I'd just be bitter. Or, have fewer clothes which would probably be better for the budget anyway. Yes, bigger closets should be on your list. You've done a great job with such a small space. I also hang my clothes by color. It helps me stay organized and remember what I have.

  4. Good job! We went from a Dallas closet the size of a small bedroom with two layers of hanging racks to a small small walk in to share in Stowe and now have twice the small walk in in California. My side still has too much. Purging is in order for me, but I'm hoping to take that east coast weight gain off, so will wait. I am inspired to straighten up a bit more now.

  5. No worries from my point of view....my whole life feels like that and I have cupboards and closets to match...I have always been a pathetic mess....behind and closet or drawer.
